Introductions and small scale herb gardens

I haven't been the best at keeping journals or blogs. But time for this to change. I have a six month work period in the mid-latitudes of Canada working for an NGO. I am living up here all by myself and need to keep myself entertained (and not through traditional entertainment, TV or more specifically my case internet) and moreover educated about what is going on in the world. Sustainability is a issue that I have taken particular interest in.

Since this spring, I have started a herb garden from disposal cups which was mildly successful. I had 28 cups of which 24 were successful in starting.

Here is the set initial setup. A couple of old coffee cups and some of peat pucks just to get it started out because they seemed cheap. It would have been cheaper just getting a larger container of peat. But I thought I would give these a shot because I was living in a basement suite and didn't have that much room.

Here is it about a week later. In hindsight, it would have been more advantageous to to wrap the seedlings in an old bread bag.

I planted Rosemary, Thyme, Onions, and Sage. With varied resulted, I couldn't recommend using this short/small of planter. (The height I used varied from 3.5" to 4") For herbs they need a little more room.

I am planning on continuing attempting to grow more plants with the end goal of growing my own lettuce for my food supply needs.

As I had said previously, the goal of this blog is keep me educated. Writing is one of the weakest aspects of my professional life (pursuit of education or what have you) and though I have taken a couple of courses on the subject. These had been helpful only by having people read them over and learning the importance of peer-reviewed literature. So I have decided to practice this much neglected tool in repetoire by completing a paper on a topic that I don't know or had limited knowledge of before have a week. So into total 26 different papers, with the goal of one a week.

Since these are essentially literature reviews I will start with a news headline most likely from DailyScience, TED, or anything that really strikes my fancy. I will try to keep within the topic of sustainability but, I've been kind of wanting to have a look at super and non-super string theory to attempt to get a grasp of it, so the topics will vary. I'll take suggestions into consideration, and I would love to hear from anyone who has experience of the topics written about.

Thanks for reading.
